  • Population:
    • Can be used for ALL children
    • Recommended for 4-5 years old or older
    • No recommendation for severity and/or cognitive ability 
  • Purpose:
    • To improve phonological awareness 
      • phonological awareness is key for literacy acquisition
  • Suggestions:
    • Complete comprehensive evaluation
    • Include:
      • language testing 
      • phonological awareness testing
      • phonological representations
  • Dosage:
    • Individual or group
    • Weekly-multiple times a week
  • Common Activities:
    • Initial phoneme isolation
      • Tell me the first sound in...
    • Phoneme identification
      • Find me all the words that begin with...
    • Phoneme isolation and identification across words
      • This little guy’s name is Dan. Find me all the toys that start with
    • Odd-one-out task
      • Which one of these words is not like the other? Cat, car, fan, comb? 

  • Other Comments:
    • Often pairs with other phonological procedures like minimal pairs
    • Broad goal of approach is to improve phonological awareness 
    • Research shows that children with speech sound disorders have lower phonological skills, which puts them at risk for literacy difficulties 
    • Could benefit:

      • Deaf/hard of hearing individuals
      • Language disorders
      • Apraxia
      • Dyslexia
