- Population:
- Can be used for ALL children
- Recommended for 4-5 years old or older
- No recommendation for severity and/or cognitive ability
- Purpose:
- To improve phonological awareness
- phonological awareness is key for literacy acquisition
- Suggestions:
- Complete comprehensive evaluation
- Include:
- language testing
- phonological awareness testing
- phonological representations
- Dosage:
- Individual or group
- Weekly-multiple times a week
- Common Activities:
- Initial phoneme isolation
- Tell me the first sound in...
- Phoneme identification
- Find me all the words that begin with...
- Phoneme isolation and identification across words
- This little guy’s name is Dan. Find me all the toys that start with
- Odd-one-out task
- Which one of these words is not like the other? Cat, car, fan, comb?
- Other Comments:
- Often pairs with other phonological procedures like minimal pairs
- Broad goal of approach is to improve phonological awareness
- Research shows that children with speech sound disorders have lower phonological skills, which puts them at risk for literacy difficulties
