Core Vocabulary
- Population:
- Ages: 2 year and older
- Recommended for:
- children inconsistent errors
- children with multiple errors
- NOT recommended for apraxic children
- Dosage:
- Twice a week for 30 minutes
- Ideally will see consistency within 8 weeks
- Target of 70 words
- Chosen by parents, child, or teacher/SLP
- Want to include a FUNCTIONAL set of words
- related to every day life
- Focus on 10 target words per week
- Practicing at home is VITAL
- SLP should be mindful and give parental/caregiver feedback
- Goals of Therapy
- Child to achieve an appropriate productive realization of each target based on the child’s phonological system and inventory
- Consistently use the established best production
- Therapy Outline:
- Session 1:
- Establishing Best Production
- SLP teaches the 10 target words selected at random from the 70
- Words taught sound-by-sound – segmentation, imitation, and cued articulation
- Children with inconsistent SSD are usually able to imitate all sounds
- Session 2:
- Drill Approach
- Practicing the target words – through games
- Moving from sounds, to words, to short sentences, to spontaneous speech
- Testing/saying the list of 10 words 3 times
- 100 responses – high rate
- 150 to 170 not out of the question
- Generalization:
- Once every 14 days, one therapy session should monitor for change/generalization
- 14 days/ every 4th sessions
- Use 10 untreated items/words and elicit them three times
- Other Comments:
- Once child is consistent you could potentially continue therapy, but using a different approach
